Study Permit:

A study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions in Canada. This permit is a Temporary Resident Visa which allows students to temporarily study in Canada for a specific period of time. Once a student has applied to a designated learning institution, they can then apply for a study permit. Requirements set by the Canadian government must be met via submission of the required documents by the student applying. Once an individual has a Canadian study permit, they can apply to renew it in Canada if they decide to continue their studies.

To be eligible for a study permit, a student must have an acceptance letter from their respective learning institution, proof of sufficient funds to cover the cost of tuition, as well as supporting documentation that varies from country to country.

A student might be refused on several grounds which will be detailed in the refusal letter issued by the visa officer. This can include a lack of proof of financial support, questioning the candidate’s intention to leave the country, or problems with travel/identity documents. The candidate can then submit an appeal if they believe their application met all the requirements mandated by the government or they can submit a new application if the grounds for refusal were valid.

Post-graduation work permits (PGWPs):

(PGWPs) are work permits given to international students who graduate from a Canadian program of study. They are valid for anywhere between eight months and three years, giving international student graduates an opportunity to work in Canada after their studies. With enough work experience in Canada, a candidate may be eligible for Canada’s Permanent Residency Programs.
