Family Sponsorship
The Family Class Sponsorship Program reunites families by enabling adult permanent residents or citizens to sponsor a relative for immigration to Canada. If an individual is at least eighteen years old and a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, they are eligible to sponsor relatives to Canada. A sponsor must be residing within Canada, unless they are a citizen currently living elsewhere, and plan to reside in and be able to support their sponsor financially in Canada once the sponsored individual arrives.
The sponsor does not have to meet the point system used in other application categories and is based on the relative in Canada that is sponsoring them. To be eligible, the person seeking sponsorship must be a:
- Spouse – Outside, Inland, Same-Sex
- Common-Law partner – (restrictions apply)
- Conjugal partner – (restrictions apply)
- Dependent children
- Parents – (Super Visa, Additional conditions apply)
- Grandparents – (Additional conditions apply)
- Brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are orphaned
The person sponsored must either be living outside Canada or residing legally in Canada temporarily, for example with a work or study permit. At the time of application, the sponsored individual must submit a medical examination and police certificates from the place of residence.
